ダブル • Daburu
Gallery 110, Seattle, WA - Aug 3 - Sep 2
Gina Ariko and Marie Okuma Johnston, recent Emerging Artist Scholarship winners, will present their solo exhibitions together, with a play on the concept of “double,” or daburu. This Japanese word embraces a mixed-race person’s entire identity, an important consideration for both Ariko and Johnston, who share the experience of growing up feeling both “too Japanese” and “too American.” Ariko’s painterly works tell stories of quiet intimacy, shared memories and dreams, while Johnston’s highly imaginative mixed-media works, digital illustrations and projects explore the harms done to Japanese peoples by White supremacist society during World War II.
