Koomuatuk (Kuzy) Curley: Stories From The Outpost

Inuit Gallery of Vancouver, North Vancouver, BC - Jun 10 - 30

by Robin Laurence

Koomuatuk Curley, known to his friends as “Kuzy,” is an Inuit sculptor, film director and videographer whose works in alabaster or serpentine often arise from memories of summers spent as a child at an outpost camp near Kinngait, Nunavut. Curley learned stone carving from his grandparents, Kaka Ashoona and Mayoreak Ashoona, who also shared traditional Inuit knowledge and storytelling with him. In form and feeling, his sculptures skilfully bridge the old and the new, the local and the global.
