Weaving Time: Nuno – Textiles of Tradition and Transformation
Portland Japanese Garden, Portland, OR - To Feb 14, 2027
Portland Japanese Garden has a knack for staging shows that link Japan’s modern and traditional aesthetics in a super calm environment that invites contemplation. This exhibition looks at NUNO (“cloth” in Japanese), the Japanese textile design studio led by designer Reiko Sudō. It presents fabrics made across eight regions of Japan, highlighting the small community makers behind them. Dangling from the ceiling, slowly turning cubes allow the viewer to get up close to the fabric design and textures, and a hands-on touch wall invites visitors to rethink their relationship to cloth. A collaboration with woodworker Chuzo Tozawa offers classically inspired folding screens. japanesegarden.org
