Richard Barnes | Marble Mountain: Excavation and the Sublime

Bau-Xi Gallery, Vancouver, BC - Nov 7 – 28

by Michael Turner

For the past four years, Richard Barnes has been capturing pictures of the marble quarries of northern Italy. The results are jaw-dropping, bringing to mind everything from medieval European Gothic cathedral-style architecture to Piet Mondrian’s early Cubist paintings. Not lost on the photographer is the effect extractive mining practices have had on the Apuan Alps. As Barnes writes in his artist’s statement: “To say that this landscape has been scoured and abraded, sometimes beyond recognition, would be an understatement.” bau-xi.com
