Gigaemi Kukwits: The Travelling Line

West Vancouver Art Museum, West Vancouver, BC - To Oct 8

by Robin Laurence

The fluid gestures, abstract imagery and rich palette of Gigaemi Kukwits’ paintings reflect years of travel – from France to Morocco and from Thailand to the American Southwest – as well as his study of the iconic formlines, ovoids and other representational devices of Northwest Coast Indigenous art. Of Coast Salish, Kwakwaka’wakw and Tlingit descent, Kukwits is interested, his artist’s statement tells us, “in the syntax of visual signifiers (glyphs) and how meaning communicates beyond the verbal.”
