Bodies Of Land: Ann Leda Shapiro & Hanako O’Leary
ArtX Contemporary, Seattle, WA - Oct 6 - Nov 19
Ann Leda Shapiro bears the distinction of having been censored when two of her works were removed from a 1973 solo show at the Whitney Museum of American Art because of her ambiguously gendered outer-space figures. After moving west, she continued to pursue feminist themes and garner critical attention. Multimedia artist Hanako O’Leary, drawing on traditional Japanese imagery, creates intricate ceramic sculptures about gender and identity. In 2020, she received a fellowship through the Robert B. McMillen Foundation.
