Across The West And Toward The North: Norwegian And American Landscape Photography

National Nordic Museum, Seattle, WA - To Nov 27

by Matthew Kangas

This fascinating and impressive survey of American and Norwegian landscape photography from the late 19th and early 20th centuries draws from a private US collection as well as the University of Bergen Library and the Norwegian Museum of Cultural History. In a remarkable compare-and-contrast exercise, the curatorial team juxtaposes examples of vintage fjord photography with images of canyons, mountains and rivers. Big names like Timothy O’Sullivan and William Henry Jackson join Scandinavian giants Knud Knudsen and Axel Lindahl.
