Adrienne Dagg: Crawling Sideways

Harcourt House Artist Run Centre, Edmonton, AB - Oct 13 - Nov 25

by Robin Laurence

Edmonton artist Adrienne Dagg employs painted images of women in domestic interiors to grapple with socially prescribed gender roles and expectations. In her artist statement, Dagg describes herself as having led “a transient life”; she says that “fragments of past and present experience” contribute to the narrative told cumulatively by her paintings. Inspired by “The Yellow Wallpaper,” a short story by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, she uses colour expressively to evoke the emotional states of her subjects.
