Decadence And Decay: The Neo Baroque World Of Mimmo Baronello

Sicilian artist Mimmo Baronello has a colourful background in theatre design. He puts this experience to powerful use in his surreal paintings as well as in his transformation of Il Museo into a setting evocative of a Baroque church dedicated to Santa Rosalia, the Sicilian “plague saint.” Baronello’s works take on the “decadence and decay” of Western society as it emerges from the pandemic, juxtaposing depictions of plants, animals and human figures with images of overconsumption, social inequity and environmental degradation.
