Sovereignty: A Photo Series by Duane Isaac
SUM gallery, Vancouver, BC
Duane Isaac’s first solo exhibition in Vancouver addresses ideas of the Indigenous body in relationship with the land. A Mi’gmaq artist from Listuguj, Quebec, Isaac has created a series of photographs of a man whose identity is obscured by a fantastical mask. Despite the suggestion of a benign natural world, the individual and the mask are eventually overwhelmed by flames, symbolizing threats to the health of both body and sovereign land – and the inseparable relationship between the two.
