Laurel Johannesson: “It’s Not the End of the World”
Herringer Kiss Gallery, Calgary, AB
Employing digital collage in the creation of her backlit images, Calgary-based artist Laurel Johannesson locates a naked female figure within a range of exotic beach and shoreline settings. Based on photographs Johannesson shot in Greece, these scenes suggest what she describes as “temporal spaces where transformation occurs.” The beach, she adds, “is the quintessential liminal zone … neither land nor sea,” ideal for the expression of fleeting psychological or mystical states. Presented as part of the 2022 Exposure Photography Festival.
