New Works: Anne Siems 

Over the past two decades, Berlin-born painter Anne Siems has created several parallel fantasy worlds of women in period clothing that are utterly convincing in their mystery and beauty. At first recalling German medieval manuscript illumination, Siems’ current theme is more up to date: the melancholy extravaganza of teenage girls with body tattoos. Via shaved heads, a fox hood, or bared necks or midriffs, Siems’ women express what she calls “signals of inner wildness … fables, mythical belonging, and rites of passage.”
