Corey Arnold & Martin Machado: Shifty Seas

Imogen Gallery, Astoria, OR

Few artists can capture the power and vastness of far-off oceans like Martin Machado and Corey Arnold. Machado, who is a sailor, made a documentary in 2014 about his 80-day ride on a container ship from New York to Thailand. The vessel’s height gives him a unique vantage point, and his new paintings express the endless play of light upon restless water in a Post-Impressionistic style. Arnold’s photos capture the raw energy of the ocean and the danger of his profession, as a cold-water commercial fisher. These still images of Neptune’s force are as close as any of us will get to a watery grave.
