Kellen Hatanaka: Safe | Home
Nikkei National Museum & Cultural Centre, Burnaby, BC
Based in Stratford, Ontario, Kellen Hatanaka is a multidisciplinary artist whose vibrant, semi-abstracted style is instantly recognizable. His exhibition of acrylic paintings and paper sculptures uses the subject of the historic Vancouver Asahi baseball team to explore representation and racism in sport and, by extension, wider Canadian society. Hatanaka’s art is supplemented by a “heritage corner” – a display of archival materials documenting the history of the championship-winning Vancouver Asahi.
