David Haughton’s Ancient Ones refers to towering old-growth cedars, rendered in acrylic on multimedia art board. Haughton’s trees swoop and sway, vibrating with a silent intensity, their palettes shifting from greens and browns to pinks and turquoises. “I wanted to make portraits of individual trees,” writes Haughton, “not landscape paintings of forests.” Inspired by the Renaissance portraits of Lucas Cranach the Elder, Haughton used “backgrounds that echo the dance of the trunk, the contortions of the great branches, and the energy and resilience of the ancient red and yellow cedars.” visualspace.ca
