4: Recent Artwork by Jean-Paul Costaz, Gordon Hughes, Gillian Richards, Joyce Woods

The artists in this exhibition became acquainted through their work in Vancouver’s film industry. Though each has a distinct painting practice, they often worked together as a team. What they share is an interest in the limits of representation, with an emphasis on space, volume, light and atmosphere. Jean-Paul Costaz works with lower registers, abstracting concrete to ethereal ends. Gordon Hughes combines intricate shapes and textures with flat fields. Gillian Richards’ landscapes are brightly quiet, seemingly ordinary, yet haunting. Joyce Woods tracks water’s elusive rhythms. vivaalliance.ca
