Bárbara Wagner & Benjamin De Burca: Swinguerra

Esker Foundation, Calgary, AB - Sep 19 – Dec 20

by Lissa Robinson

Bárbara Wagner and Benjamin de Burca have worked collaboratively since 2011. Their work merges fiction, documentary and ethnography into “documentary musicals” and installations that explore postcolonial visibility, surveillance and creativity. Commissioned for the Venice Biennale in 2019, Swinguerra is an immersive film featuring marginalized, queer Afro-Brazilian communities in Recife. Through high-energy, athletic dance styles like swingueira and brega funk, the performers channel historical resistance against oppression, proving how music and movement remain vital sources of community, agency and political expression. eskerfoundation.com
