Permanent Immigrant: Italo Scanga In The Dale And Leslie Chihuly Collection
Museum of Northwest Art, La Conner, WA - To May 14
Close friend of glass artist Dale Chihuly and frequent visitor to the Pilchuck Glass School, Italian American artist Italo Scanga has been described as a Neo-Dadaist and a Neo-Expressionist. His use of humble found objects such as twigs, farm tools and foodstuffs and his references to peasant life in his native Calabria, however, suggest his roots in Arte Povera. Whatever his materials – whether potatoes, painted wood or kitsch figurines of saints – his art often addressed social injustice, past and present. Guest curated by Matthew Kangas.
