Southern Alberta Art Gallery, Lethbridge, AB - To Apr 23

by Robin Laurence

Marigold Santos’ installation brings together rhythmically expressionistic paintings, an audio soundscape, narrative text and a large-scale drawing to evoke Tinikling, a folk dance tradition of the Philippines, where she was born. Santos immigrated to Canada with her family in 1988, earned a BFA from the University of Calgary and an MFA from Concordia University and is widely acclaimed for her interdisciplinary practice. In this new work, Tinikling serves as a metaphor of “embodied resilience.”
