Rebecca Belmore: Hacer Memoria
The Polygon Gallery, North Vancouver, BC - Through Jun
Widely acclaimed for her provocative work across performance, sculpture, photog- raphy, installation and video, Rebecca Belmore has created an outdoor artwork that hangs above the east façade of The Polygon Gallery. Composed of sewn pieces of blue and orange tarpaulin material, the work depicts nine oversized shirts, each “emblazoned” with a single letter that together spell the ambiguous word “hereafter.” Allusions include the Pope’s penitential acknowledgement of a devastating past – the residential school system – and the unknown future of the Indigenous Peoples of these lands.
