Katazome Today: Migrations Of A Japanese Art
Whatcom Museum - Lightcatcher Building, Bellingham, WA - Feb 11 - Jun 11
An international roster of artists reenvisions the centuries-old art of katazome fabric dyeing with works that are revitalizing this endangered art form. Katazome was historically used for kimono and the traditional technique is still practiced in Japan. In this show, seven artists from Australia, the US, Germany and Japan expand the use of katazome as a form of expression employing large-scale installations, free-form painting, and contemporary themes of personal identity, environmental change and the impact of globalization on local culture.
