Isabelle Du Toit: Méli-Mélo
Patricia Rovzar Gallery, Seattle, WA - May 1 – 31
Isabelle du Toit’s career has taken off since her 2010 arrival from South Africa. Her representational paintings are always tied to the animal world, partly to draw attention to endangered species—so central in Africa—and partly to use nonhuman beings as allegorical or symbolic stand-ins for the human condition. Whether animals, birds or fish, the images in her immaculately painted scenes are always depicted in front of a black void, emphasizing their precarious existence.
