Facing Photographs
Walter Phillips Gallery, Banff, AB - To May 4
Facing Photographs takes inspiration from Facing the Camera (2008–18), a major series by Métis artist Rosalie Favell that captured over 500 portraits of artists and arts workers across Canada, Australia and the United States. Drawing from Banff Centre’s Permanent Collection, the exhibition showcases work by 12 established artists who explore agency, self-representation and the politics of portraiture. Through photography and other media, the works interrogate photography’s role in colonial narratives, challenge fixed identities, and reflect on the complexities of self-representation.
