Lam Tung Pang: Out of This World

Richmond Art Gallery, Richmond, BC - To Jan 2, 2027

by Michael Turner

Out of This World is a site-specific installation focused on artist Lam Tung Pang’s experiences in the Pacific Northwest after moving to Richmond, BC, from Hong Kong three-and-a-half years ago, at the age of 45. The installation con- sists of drawing, sculpture, video, slides and overhead projection and features a body of recurrent imagery, with an emphasis on the Canadian landscape, domestic interiors and outer space. Although Lam has been working worldwide for a number of years, Out of This World is his first solo exhibition in Canada.

“After deciding to leave Hong Kong for Richmond, Tung Pang delved into the experience of migration as an opportunity to evolve, change, grow,” says Zoë Chan, Richmond Art Gallery curator. “He’s had a peripatetic life. He’s not sentimental or interested in searching for his roots or a sense of belonging. These works are a reflection of his desire to understand how his sense of self changes as he moves between places. His project is profoundly existential in nature and explores the migrant’s inevitable feelings of alienation and vulnerability. But at the same time, he brings an irresistible sense of play and imagination to the work, so it never feels heavy.”

An essential element in Lam’s work, the tie that binds his installations, is light—specifically, the interplay of light and shadow. For Out of This World, Lam uses not only projectors but also lamps purchased from Richmond residents on Facebook Marketplace. A further refinement concerns the artist’s canny use of analogue and digital light formats to affect our sense of belonging and displacement when moving though the installation.
