Abstraction Now – Harcourt’s Practitioners of Abstract Art + Guest Artists

Harcourt House Artist Run Centre, Edmonton, AB - May 8 – Jun 20

by Lissa Robinson

To celebrate 120 years of abstract art, curator Jacek Malec highlights its diverse approaches to include colour-field painting, lyrical painting and minimalism—all within the Edmonton context. Contemporary practitioners Carla Lam, Sheila Luck, Wiz Wensel, Mitchel Smith, Scott Cumberland and Darren Kooyman join senior Alberta artists, many associated with the Edmonton School of Formalists and Edmonton Contemporary Artists’ Society. Influenced by modernist ideals and often linked to Clement Greenberg’s aesthetics, this movement emphasized bright colour, geometric forms and gestural abstraction. harcourthouse.ab.ca
