Memories, Maps, Reflections: The Cartography of Bettina Matzkuhn
Il Museo, Italian Cultural Centre, Vancouver, BC - Apr 16 – May 24
Textile artist Bettina Matzkuhn’s embroidered maps run the gamut from city grids and garden paths to the heraldic. Her current exhibition focuses on the intertwining of memory and place: how memory is not sequential but selective, less activated by the delineations of an ordered landscape than brokered by emotion. In one work, an imaginary tour of Canada is stitched onto a guitar strap. In another, the more memorable signposts on Vancouver’s Commercial Drive are not the shops but the trees that stand outside them. italianculturalcentre.ca
