Lauren Boilini: Celestial Navigation
San Juan Islands Museum of Art, Friday Harbor, WA - To Jun 1
The large-scale oil on linen paintings on display here range from birds and insects that fly to signifiers of flight, such as feathers, to evocations of flight itself. In Easy on the Eyes, this evocation is most pronounced through a scrum of what appear to be flightless turkeys, whose swirling color patterns give the impression of flight. Ironically, in Easy, Tiger, the flight formation of exotic birds suggests a static column as it reaches up into the sky, toward a pitted ochre sun. sjima.org
