Amy Loewan: Sanctuary

Art Gallery of Alberta, Edmonton, AB - To May 31

by Lissa Robinson

Amy Loewan's exhibition is a highly crafted meditation on themes of peace, compassion and interconnectedness. Central to the installation is a large-scale, glowing lantern intricately woven from rice paper strips, some inscribed with words such as kindness, tolerance, and forgiveness in different languages. Suspended above a golden wheat field, this octagonal lantern is a beautiful metaphor for the illuminated heart. Surrounding it are watercolour paintings that use vibrant colours, geometric shapes and a glazing technique to create depth and luminosity. youraga.ca
