Rick Bartow

Froelick Gallery, Portland, OR - Oct 14 – Nov 28

by Joseph Gallivan

Rick Bartow, of the Mad River Band of Wiyot Indians, has his work in over 100 public collections. As his retrospective of 40 years, Things You Know But Cannot Explain, showed, his Baconesque paintings play well in condos and colleges as well as boardrooms. Anyone who loves Ted Hughes’ poetry volume Crow will love the dark creative energy of Bartow’s rough sculptures, where there’s never a final coffin nail. Bartow died in 2016 but his work lives on in the Pacific Northwest.
