Lawrence Paul Yuxweluptun Lets’lo:tseltun: Floor Opener

Kelowna Art Gallery, Kelowna, BC - To May 31

by Michael Turner

Of Cowichan (Hul’q’umi’num Coast Salish) and Okanagan (Syilx) descent, Lawrence Paul Yuxweluptun Lets’lo:tseltun is a leading figure in contemporary modern painting in Canada and the fight for the rights of Indigenous Peoples. Now nearing his 50th year of merging art-making and activism, he continues to produce large-scale, mythological “history paintings” at an almost exponential rate. For the past few years his focus has been on the burning Earth, and it is here where we see how the brushstroke and the flame become one. kelownaartgallery.com
