Wes Bell: Snag

The photo-based works featured in Snag came about during Wes Bell’s drive across the spare, wind-whipped Alberta prairie. After saying goodbye to his mother, who had been dying of cancer, the artist experienced a moment of reckoning, a moment that, like the shredded plastic snared in the barbed wire along the highway’s many fences, snared him too. Most remarkable about these black-and-white pictures is how these captured pieces of plastic defy any record of their purpose while at the same time taking on both animal and abstract forms.
