National Nordic Museum, Seattle, WA - To Jul 21

by Matthew Kangas

This thorough exhibition follows African American jazz greats, artists and writers from the US to their adopted homes and performance tours in Denmark, Norway and Sweden. Through album covers, posters, publicity photographs and fine art photography, the show documents famous musicians like Dexter Gordon and Josephine Baker. It also includes paintings and sculptures by previously unknown artists such as William H. Johnson, Herbert Gentry, Walter Williams and Howard Smith. Current performance artist Jason Diakité, stage name Timbuktu, is also examined.
