LEILA SUJIR | forest documents

Southern Alberta Art Gallery, Lethbridge, AB - To Oct 18

by Lissa Robinson

As part of Leila Sujir’s ongoing forest! series, forest documents immerses viewers in the old-growth Walbran Valley forests on Vancouver Island through a two-sided installation combining 3-D video, spatialized sound and a Reading Room of publications. Using aerial and ground footage, the work captures both the forest’s majesty and the threats from ongoing logging, set against the history of protests including Fairy Creek. Collaborations with artists, librarians and Elder Bill Jones weave together archival, ecological and poetic narratives that bring the forest to life.
