Jessica Jackson Hutchins: Wrecked and Righteous
Frye Art Museum, Seattle, WA - To May 5
For her West Coast museum debut, Portland-based multimedia artist Jessica Jackson Hutchins worked with Frye curator Amanda Donnan to assemble numerous works made of clay, glass, papier mâché, plastic, fabric and other materials, reflecting her pile-on technique of layering and juxtaposing myriad elements in each piece. Hutchins employs figurative surrogates, still lifes, disused furniture, relief paintings, abstract needlepoints, vases and vessels. Paintings are no more privileged than pots; junk-store sofas are no less respected than pedestal sculptures.
