American Impressionism: Treasures From The Daywood Collection

Northwest Museum of Arts & Culture, Spokane, WA - To Jan 8, 2023

by Matthew Kangas

Forty-one canvases borrowed from the Huntington Museum of Art in West Virginia comprise this survey of works collected by Arthur Dayton and Ruth Woods Dayton, who wanted to preserve paintings reflective of American life. Formerly neglected, artists such as John Twachtman, Willard Metcalf and J. Alden Weir are comparable to their French counterparts, but with a stronger emphasis on realist drawing. Evocative landscapes, portraits, interiors and still lifes enchant viewers with color and light.
