Medusa: The Archetype in Contemporary Myth

Il Museo, Italian Cultural Centre, Vancouver, BC - To Oct 31

by Michael Turner

This exhibition, comprised of 13 artists working mostly in paint, sculpture, fibre and photography, explores the Greco-Roman myth of Medusa, who, for her beauty, bravery or her love affair with Poseidon, was transformed by a jealous Athena, exiled and eventually decapitated by Perseus, who used her serpent-haired head as a weapon (all who saw it were turned to stone). Notable works include Ruth Sheuing’s cotton and copper wire handwoven jacquard portrait of the Gorgons and Denise Carson Wilde’s wall-mounted beachcombed torch/bust.
