Karin Jones: Ornament & Instrument

Karin Jones: Ornament & Instrument is the catalogue to last year’s Burnaby Art Gallery exhibition. Jones, an interdisciplinary artist with a background as a goldsmith, has crafted a series of extraordinary sculptural objects expressing the complexities of African Canadian identity in the wake of colonialism, slavery and displacement. Employing hair as both material and metaphor, she also examines historical notions of whiteness and their impact on the racialized “Other.” Among the works illustrated here are a life-size Victorian mourning gown composed of synthetic hair and found farm implements which she has adorned with gold and silver inlay.
