Anna Semenoff’s expressive figurative oil paintings are drawn largely from memory or mediated sources. They mostly feature female subjects, young or old, comfortably alone or conspiring in pairs, sometimes amorphous. Her palette tends toward intermediate colours, though she is not averse to applying blacks directly from the tube or spray can. A highlight work appears at first to be a figure holding herself, but over time, a larger second figure emerges to take possession of the outsized left arm. gfag.ca
