Sep 11-Nov 22 History Paintings: Gordon Hookey & Lawrence Paul Yuxweluptun features the works of Gordon Hookey (Waanyi people) and Lawrence Paul Yuxweluptun Lets’lo:tseltun (Cowichan, Hul’q’umi’num Coast Salish; and Okanagan, Syilx). While the term History Painting is more often associated with mythological and classical historical narratives, the works of Hookey and Yuxweluptun offer a vivid and powerful reinterpretation of this genre of painting set within their respective homelands in Australia and Canada. Through their depiction of events of historical significance merged together with narratives of the present, their works require us to look squarely at the realities of this present-day. The monumental scale of these paintings ensures that we not waver from the truths that they reveal.
