The Magic World of Leonora Carrington

Oregon Jewish Museum and Center for Holocaust Education, Portland, OR - To Oct 13

by Joseph Gallivan

An early Surrealist, Leonora Carrington explored metamorphosis, magic and biblical allegory in her art, with hybrid, half-human beasts that straddle the world of nature and dreams. A skilled printer as well as a painter, she used both media to explore not only psychology but also mysticism. Raised in a well-to-do northern English home, she is the Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (a.k.a. Lewis Carroll) of Lancashire, escaping the rule-bound life of the upper classes into fantasy.
