Ruth Beer: Seep | Swell

Art Gallery at Evergreen Cultural Centre, Coquitlam, BC - To Feb 9

by Michael Turner

Seep | Swell represents the latest stage in the evolution of sculptor Ruth Beer, whose early influences were minimalist abstract and elemental forms. Yet unlike the Minimalist sculptors of the 1960s, Beer was drawn to a more detailed examination of materials. She explores their social implications, most notably through the narrativization of landscape, and in particular within the ecological transformation of the Pacific Northwest. The exhibition is accompanied by an attractive publication, with texts from co-curators Katherine Dennis and Jennifer Cane.
