Canoe

Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies, Banff, AB - Jun 17-Oct 16

by Michael Turner

No Canadian symbol is more durable in both form and function than the canoe. With works drawn largely from a private collection, this exhibition explores the canoe as medium of historical and cultural knowledge, from precontact times through Euro- pean colonization to our present-day re-examination of Indigenous-settler relations. Works by Indigenous artists Rodney Sayers, Pinock Smith and Joe Talirunili appear alongside those of settler artists Frances Anne Hopkins, Cornelius Krieghoff, David Milne and Lucius O’Brien.
