GU Xiong: The Remains of a Journey
GU XIONG: THE REMAINS OF A JOURNEY is the solemn publication documenting the two-part exhibition seen last year at Centre A and Canton-sardine in Vancouver. The artist researched and photographed five historical sites – some now demolished – associated with Chinese immigration to British Columbia. These include a former Chinatown, a Chinese cemetery, and the D’Arcy Island leper colony. Xiong also
travelled to a “Canada Village” in Guangdong, China, built by migrants who returned to their homeland after labouring in BC. Intertwined themes include the construction of history and the play of memory in the context of racist immigration policies. Contributors include Steven Dragonn and Henry Heng Lu. Texts in English and Chinese.
