Dakota Modern: The Art Of Oscar Howe
DAKOTA MODERN: THE ART OF OSCAR HOWE is the most extensive representation of Howe’s artworks to date, examining his life as both artist and educator. Howe (1915- 1983) committed his artistic career to an authentic Modernist style that simultaneously expressed his Yanktonai Dakota heritage. His commitment to Sioux culture and aesthetics challenged stereotypes and influenced further generations of Native American artists to cultivate individuality. The monograph was published by the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian in conjunction with the retrospective exhibi- tion currently on view at the Portland Art Museum (to May 14).
