Hiding from the Nazis: The Art of Johannes Kunst
Center on Contemporary Art (CoCA), Seattle, WA - Sep 5 – 29
This exhibition, guest curated by Preview’s Matthew Kangas, features later paintings by Johannes Kunst (1938–2017). The Dutch-born resident of Blaine, Washington, along with his brother, was hidden in an attic for two years by his grandparents, as other kids were rounded up by the Nazis and sent to Germany as slave laborers. Though formally and situationally Surrealist, Kunst’s paintings suggest a union of Miró and Chagall. The works relate to Kunst’s time in that attic.
