Signs of Dissent

Blackfish Gallery, Portland, OR - Feb 4 – 28

by Joseph Gallivan

The artist-activists of Blackfish are taking on “the reemergence of 20th-century specters of xenophobia and ultranationalist authoritarianism,” according to the publicity. No prizes for guessing that this is about Trump and his followers, and images of “Old Glory” will feature plenty. The question is, does protest art change anything if it’s in a gallery and not on the streets or online? And can it keep up with world events? At least galleries like Blackfish are quicker to react than museums and more commercial galleries. And it is hosting a month of talks, workshops and music about fighting the power.
