Contemporary Joomchi: New Works by Jiyoung Chung
ArtX Contemporary, Seattle, WA
After her studies at the Rhode Island School of Design and Cranbrook Academy of Art, in Detroit, Jiyoung Chung’s career took off with her exploration of an ancient Korean craft tradition, hand-felted hanji (mulberry) paper, or joomchi. While reviving the perforated, dyed and stacked paper-panel technique – and even writing a book on the topic – Chung has also exhibited all over the world. Her colorful structures breathe new life into modernist abstraction.
