Seeing and Being Seen

Art Gallery of Alberta, Edmonton, AB - To Sep 14

by Lissa Robinson

Curated by Catherine Crowston, this compelling exhibition was inspired by a recent donation of British and European prints including works by Frank Auerbach, Lucien Freud and Paula Rego. These powerful works deepen the gallery’s collection, opening a rich dialogue on the portrayal of women in art. Spanning the early 20th to 21st century, the exhibition features portraits, self-portraits and intimate life scenes—from girlhood to motherhood—capturing women as subjects, viewers and creators. With works by a wide selection of artists, it explores the nuanced dance between artist, sitter and viewer.
