Hangama Amiri: Parting
Esker Foundation, Calgary, AB - To Apr 27
Deeply influenced by diasporic experiences, artist Hangama Amiri weaves stories into intricate textile collages that combine painting, printmaking, quilting and appliqué techniques. Fleeing Kabul in 1996 after the Taliban’s rise, Amiri and her family endured a nine-year separation, connected by only letters and snapshots. Her vivid and lavishly constructed works use layered fabric pieces meticulously sewn together. The fragments characterize a collective remembering amid the trauma of migration, and symbolize the bonds that connect families across space and time.
