Nov 19 -Jan 28 I Almost Ran Over Liza Minelli Today: Colin Campbell and Lisa Steele in L.A., 1976-77. Curated by Jon Davies. In September 1976, Toronto based video artists Colin Campbell and Lisa Steele drove a VW Bug to Venice Beach. With the help of a Canada Council grant, they stayed until May 1977 and produced a series of pioneering videos fusing performance and narrative, mining the “strange culture” of LA to explore the schism between authentic self and the artifice of a constructed persona. Through work such as The Woman from Malibu series and The Scientist Tapes, they put into circulation novel forms of love and kinship, subcultural attitudes and queer styles.
